Cameras Help Good Drivers Become Better

When it comes to safety, your technology is only as good a tool as you allow it to be. In other words, how does it help the person behind the wheel operate more safely? This is why the drivers’ scores are so important— they are measurable insights that show what drivers are doing well and where there’s room to improve.

In our experience at ICSA, event recorders make good drivers even better! Our approved camera companies (Netradyne, SmartDrive, Motive, and Samsara) don't just provide the videos you need to coach drivers or improve your own driving but also give you access to extensive video analytics. Event recorders ensure drivers operate safely, reduce crashes, and make it easier to defend against a claim.

SmartDrive and Netradyne are the most common camera companies in ICSA’s fleet. Here are some examples of how you can utilize these companies:

Netradyne

Netradyne’s platform takes a proactive approach by not only identifying risk but also rewarding safe behavior through its Driver Star Events. These are rewarded when a driver takes intentional, safety-conscious actions, like slowing down when cut off or safely moving over for a vehicle on the shoulder.

Each Driver Star Event contributes to a driver’s Green Zone Score, a metric designed to highlight consistent, positive behavior. Drivers can earn up to 50 points from Driver Stars and Streaks, emphasizing the importance of both good decisions and ongoing excellence behind the wheel.

SmartDrive

SmartDrive scores help evaluate driving behaviors like following distance, speeding, and distractions. The lower the score, the safer the habits. The average score among SmartDrive users is currently 29, with 85% of ICSA members using the platform meeting or exceeding the safety goal score. These numbers show that drivers are making real progress.

But scores aren’t just about pointing out mistakes, they’re about coaching and recognition. With SmartDrive, coaching sessions can be targeted and effective, helping drivers correct unsafe habits and build improved long-term skills.

What These Scores Really Mean

These scores aren’t about punishment. They’re about improvement and opportunity. Drivers get credit for the good decisions they make and identify areas where training or coaching can boost their skills and confidence.

When fleets prioritize driver development over vehicle metrics, everyone wins. Safer drivers mean fewer accidents, lower insurance premiums, better customer relationships, and, most importantly, more people getting home safely.

How Are You Driving?

If you’re using any of ICSA’s preferred or approved cameras, take a moment to review your latest driver scores. Whether you're aiming to lower your score or rack up more Driver Stars, every step you take makes the road a safer place for all of us.
