Focus on ELDs
With the upcoming CVSA International Roadcheck 2026 focus on ELD tampering, ICSA wanted to remind members some things that they need to know about their ELDs.
Why 2026 Demands Extra Attention from Drivers
The 2026 road construction season is going to be one of the largest in U.S. history and anyone using the roads should be prepared for what’s coming. This year, transportation construction is projected to reach nearly $209 billion, marking the peak of activity under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA). After years of planning, permitting, and design, projects are now fully underway across the country. This makes safety extra important for professional drivers.
What makes 2026 especially significant is timing. Federal funding from IIJA expires this year, creating urgency for states to complete projects. Most of the work consists of repairing or reconstructing aging infrastructure, while additional efforts include expanding capacity, improving safety systems, and upgrading road resilience. In short, this isn’t just expansion, it’s a nationwide effort to fix critical roadways.
What does all this mean for you? There will be a major increase in work zones this summer. Drivers can expect lane reductions, shifting traffic patterns, nighttime paving, and occasional closures. States like Wisconsin and Minnesota alone are managing hundreds of projects, while larger states such as Texas, California, and Florida are overseeing multi-billion-dollar improvements. No matter where you drive, work zones will be a constant presence this year.
Work zone safety must remain a top priority. Most work zone crashes are caused by speeding and distracted driving, not just challenging road conditions. This requires increased awareness, reduced speed, and full attention behind the wheel. It’s also important to remember that most states enforce increased penalties in work zones, including doubled fines for violations.
For commercial drivers, the responsibility is even greater. Work zones often include narrow lanes, sudden stops, and workers close to moving traffic. Taking a few extra seconds to slow down can prevent serious crashes and save lives.
2026 will bring unprecedented construction activity across the nation. Drivers play a critical role in ensuring these projects remain safe. When drivers stay focused, everyone in the work zone stays safer.

In March, ICSA’s executive director Shawn Nelson was privileged to attend the annual conference for the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). Truckload 2026 was packed with information that ICSA is committed to bringing back to its members.
Safety is a priority not just because it prevents accidents; it also helps make a carrier profitable. Every smart decision behind the wheel can save lives and reduces costs.
